Kelly: “Let’s call this what it is: this is corruption in broad daylight.”

In case you missed it, U.S. Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) held a press conference to announce the introduction of the Drain the Slush Fund Act, new legislation that would effectively shutter Donald Trump’s so-called “Anti-Weaponization Fund” and prevent taxpayer dollars from being paid to the President or his allies, including those convicted of crimes related to the insurrection on January 6, 2021.

Sen. Kelly speaks on Capitol Hill.

Watch Kelly’s full remarks here. See key excerpts from Kelly’s remarks below:

Kelly called out the misuse of taxpayer money: “Right now, families across this country are struggling and are having a hard time making ends meet. They’re paying more for groceries, housing, rent, health care, and trying to stretch every single dollar they have. The last thing they should have to do is foot the bill for Donald Trump’s $1.8 billion slush fund. This thing is a disgrace. Let’s call this what it is: this is corruption in broad daylight.”

Kelly laid out how we got here: “In November of 2020, on election night, Donald Trump declared that if he lost the election, it’s because it was stolen. Then he doubled down, again and again, eventually summoning an angry mob to Capitol Hill where they attacked the United States Congress in an attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 election. That mob assaulted men and women of the Capitol Police and assaulted local law enforcement. And then, as soon as he got back into office, Donald Trump pardoned the violent criminals involved in this attack.

“But then this administration went even further. They created this crooked fund to reward criminals who assaulted cops. I’m the son of two police officers. I find this a disgrace. And it should outrage every American regardless of political party.”

Kelly emphasized the need to pass this legislation: “That’s why we are introducing this legislation: to put a permanent stop to this and make sure no president, Democrat or Republican, can abuse the Department of Justice for these kinds of corrupt deals in the future. This should not be a partisan issue. I understand many of our Republican colleagues have concerns about this slush fund too. Well, that’s good. We have a solution. They can support this bill, and it will be banned.”
